It was my first visit to The Woodlands Park Hotel near Cobham in Surrey for the wedding of Helen + Matt in mid June. The weather was good and was it was lovely to see previous client’s Kirsty (this time as a bridesmaid) + Danny again. The hotel has a fantastic staircase which I used to photograph Helen walking to the wedding ceremony room. The grounds were great for portraits and a large group photo from an upstairs window. The band rocked ’til late as the guests enjoyed a dance. Enjoy the slideshow -

Pelham House | Maria + Mark

At the end of May I photographed the wedding of Maria + Mark who live in Poets Corner (the part of Hove where I live and work) too. It gave me (and Ken, my assistant) the chance to visit the Catholic church on Portland Road. The balcony at the rear of the church was aÂ fantastic viewpoint for photographs for Ken and I covered the ceremony from the front. The reception was held at Pelham House in the centre of Lewes. This was my first visit to Pelham as a photographer having been before as a guest. The splendid flowers were created by Lynette and the team at Viva Verde here in Hove and it was lovely to see the amazing table pieces she designed. The food and service at Pelham was great and the gardens were a perfect venue for drinks and canapes. Dinner was served in the Dining Room and the speeches well received. Enjoy the slideshow -

Your Sussex Wedding Magazine – Real life wedding

It is great to see my clients Donna & Dan featured in Your Sussex Wedding magazine this month. Donna & Dan were married here in Brighton last summer with their reception at The Old Market Place in Brighton city centre. It’s been a while since I’ve had a wedding featured in a magazine and it is always exciting to see you work in print when it arrives in the post and on the shelves of every newsagent in the county.

Donna & Dan ordered an album which was my Album of the Month slideshow for January.

Frances & Kevin – Brighton Pavillion

Frances and Kevin were married at Brighton Pavillion, I was there to shoot my espresso option, which is 2 hours coverage and a high resolution DVD of all the edited print ready jpg files. It is perfect for small romantic weddings here in Brighton. The Brighton Festival was on so the street were busy with visitors and the heavy rain showers kept away until all the guests were seated at The Coach House for their meal. Enjoy the slideshow -

Rebecca & Dominic – The Dome Cinema, Worthing

Rebecca & Dominic married in Worthing in mid May and Ken (my assistant) and I were there to photograph the day. The ceremony was at the lovely church on the corner of Steyne Gardens which I have driven by thousands of times but never visited and the reception was held at The Dome Cinema on the seafront overlooking Worthing Pier. The Dome has been refurbished and is looking gorgeous both inside and out. We took advantage of the late afternoon sun for portraits on Worthing Pier. Enjoy the slideshow -

Sophie + Tom at Mountains Country House, Kent

Alison & Spencer – Jeremy’s Restaurant

May started with a visit to Jeremy’s Restaurant in Borde Hill for the wedding of Alsion & Spencer. The weather was good as Alison and Spencer, who met when he moved into the block of flats where Alison lives, married in the spring sunshine. What happens if it rains on my wedding day?

Here in the UK it rains, often when it is not expected. So what can you do to stop the rainÂ from spoiling your wedding plans?

Reception Venue – does it have enough covered space for all the guests you intend to invite? Some venues work well for a summer wedding when the guests can remain outside for the afternoon but can they all be accomodated comfortably inside if it is raining? Upwaltham Barns has flexible space to host a wedding all year round.

Shoes or Wellies – as the bride (or guest) – do think about footwear and the ground you will walking on, country roads are muddy after rain and a spare pair of shoes or wellies are useful to have ready for walking to and from the church and reception venue. There are some stylish wellies available these days!

White umbrellas – if you think it might rain in the month you plan to get married make sure you have at least a couple of white umbreallas ready. An umbrella with a bank or company logo on the side does not look quite so pretty. You can purchase them online for about Â£15 each.

Wedding photos – we can take the formal photos in a side room or close by using photographic lights. This formal photograph was lit against a plain white wall.

So, don’t despair. There are ways to keep you dry and to enjoy your wedding day even if the weather seems to be against you. You never know, it might just brighten up enough to get outside for a while. We dodged the showers to take portraits on Woolacombe Beach on the rainiest day last September.

Portrait sessions

Spring is here (kind of…) which means I’m out shooting portrait sessions with wedding clients. Some people do question a pre wedding portrait shoot so here is my theory on why a portrait session is good for you -

â€¢ It is a good opportunity to get to know me and for me to know you before the wedding day.
â€¢ You might be nervous about portraits – so it is good to get a little practice in.
â€¢ You might love portraits – so let’s get it on!
â€¢ You get a free print and you parents might like a lovely portrait of the pair of you too.

I really enjoy meeting everyone before their wedding and I’m sure it helps calm the photography nerves and improve our relationship by taking time to meet up beforehand. We often head down to the seafront 5 minutes away where I love the bright colours of the beach huts, the textures of the doors and I’m sure everyone loves a bit of sea air.
