Snow chains save the wedding day!

Snow chains save the day – as you are well aware the month of December 2010 was the coldest in 100 years. This led me to be concerned about reaching 2 weddings which I knew were located in areas with small country roads. So I took the step of ordering snow chains for my car to give me the best chance of arriving at the wedding. Well, it snowed heavily the night before my wedding at Bury Court Barn near Farnham in Surrey. The journey usually takes me 1hr 45mins. This time it took me 4 hours 20 mins! I had to use the snowchains to get out of Brighton and onto the motorway and then again for half the journey through Surrey. I then had to use them again for the last mile and half up the hill to the venue. It is slow and a bit fiddly to fit and remove them but they kept me moving and many motorists who were barely in control of their vehicles gave me an envious glance as I trundled by! Simon + Pip were really pleased to see me arrive even though I had kept them updated on my progress during the mornings’ adventure. I was impressed at how well they worked biting into ice as smoothly polished as an ice rink and I’m really pleased I had them to keep me going on the journey.

Perhaps what I’m trying to say here is that a good wedding photographer will go the extra mile to get to your wedding and deliver great photos whatever the weather. I hope that is considered before you book your wedding photographer.

Robbie Williams wedding photos

Just a quick post to comment on Robbie + Ayda’s wedding photos in “Hello” magazine this week. It was refreshing to see a more documentary approach to their wedding coverage and a move away from page after page of dull formal photos so often seen in these types of articles. Congratulations Robbie + Ayda.

Bury Court Barn wedding photos | Caroline + Mike

Here is a slideshow from my recent wedding with Caroline + Mike at Bury Court Barn in Bentley, Hampshire. The sun was out then covered by high cloud for the drinks reception. Bury Court Barn is one of my favourite venues for a wedding in summer or winter. Watch out for the surprise guest after the first dance. Thanks to Dean at Safe as Milk.org for the transition, the website has been upgraded to Word Press version 3. Now I can update the blog and get one with some maintenance work around here.

Good news – the new Jon Day Photo website has gone live. A big thank you to everyone involved in the design, testing and launch of this fine site. There are plenty of new portfolios and album layouts too for you to view and much more flexibility for me to upload new photos after each wedding.

Commercial Photography | Convenience Store shoot

Recently I met Sarah from Convenience Store (the trade journal) and two models to photograph the cover and illustration photos for the cover article in the July 10th 2009 edition. My brief was to photograph teenagers / students purchasing typical convenience store items such magazines, chocalate and fizzy drinks.Â We visited a recently refurbished Co-Op here in Brighton and although we were there mid morning we had to dodge the customers as we photographed several scenarios. Photographing for a cover requires a slightly different approach in that space must left top and bottom for the logo and copy. In commercial photography it is always great to see your work published but with a circulation of 41,000 per week this is my biggest print run yet!

Surrey Wedding Photography | Helen + Matt

It was my first visit to The Woodlands Park Hotel near Cobham in Surrey for the wedding of Helen + Matt in mid June. The weather was good and was it was lovely to see previous client’s Kirsty (this time as a bridesmaid) + Danny again. The hotel has a fantastic staircase which I used to photograph Helen walking to the wedding ceremony room. The grounds were great for portraits and a large group photo from an upstairs window. The band rocked ’til late as the guests enjoyed a dance. Enjoy the slideshow -

Sussex Children’s Portraits | Ella + James

Recently I spent the afternoon photographing Ella + James at home. With sunshine and showers forecast they cooked lunch (with help from mum and dad!) and showed me round the house. Childrens portraits is a new area for me but it was great to spend time with the kids – they are so full of energy. Event Photography | The Grocer Gold Awards 09

Late last week I was in London at The Dorchester hotel on Park Lane, London for the annual Grocer Gold Awards. The Grocer is the journal for the grocery industry and is published weekly. The evening starts with pre dinner drinks reception and impressive meal service by the waiting staff of the fine hotel. The after dinner speech was delivered by Vince Cable (MP for Twickenham & Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer) and his outlook and understanding of the economy was enlightening. He dashed off to appear on Newsnight whilst the awards were given out to a lively room of grocer executives and their guests.

My brief is to photograph the drinks reception beforehand, the VIPs on the Editor’s table and during the announcements the reaction from the winner’s table. I then photograph the award winner on their return from the podium ideally with the stage in the background. I finish with party photos afterwards.Â It is a hectic evening and I edit and deliver the photos to the editor that night so it is a late finish. There are more photos from the layout below.

Pelham House | Maria + Mark

At the end of May I photographed the wedding of Maria + Mark who live in Poets Corner (the part of Hove where I live and work) too. It gave me (and Ken, my assistant) the chance to visit the Catholic church on Portland Road. The balcony at the rear of the church was aÂ fantastic viewpoint for photographs for Ken and I covered the ceremony from the front. The reception was held at Pelham House in the centre of Lewes. This was my first visit to Pelham as a photographer having been before as a guest. The splendid flowers were created by Lynette and the team at Viva Verde here in Hove and it was lovely to see the amazing table pieces she designed. The food and service at Pelham was great and the gardens were a perfect venue for drinks and canapes. Dinner was served in the Dining Room and the speeches well received. Enjoy the slideshow -
